In the introductory phase of the study programme, students get started with a concrete project in small teams. Various courses convey the foundations of the field of study and short examples are used to establish links between the subjects. Excursions to regional companies provide an insight into IT professions. After completing additional foundation courses, students dive into their future professional field in the professional practice semester. Alternatively, they can also choose to gain international experience during a semester abroad in semester 4. From semester 5, elective modules allow students to specialise in various focus topics of informatics. The project and bachelor’s thesis round out the study programme.
Study hands-on in an experimental learning environment
Our information society needs capable informaticians. At the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, you will acquire a solid foundation and diverse knowledge for the development of high-quality IT systems in small groups and will be prepared for collaboration in agile projects. Our technology labs open up scope for independent and experimental learning. Working in cooperation with regional companies will offer you an insight into differing professional fields – for example, into the diverse tasks of software development, the set-up and ongoing development of IT infrastructures or specific requirements of different industries. An integrated semester abroad or a professional placement semester provides international or professional experience.
Why choose this programme
Successfully starting the study programme in a team
The students of Informatics and the students of of Business Informatics start their introductory study phase together in interdisciplinary teams. Step by step, they are introduced to the IT infrastructure, and their first project develops from initial, small automation tasks.Play an active role in developing the culture of the study programme

At the end of every winter semester, students from the various informatics programmes present the results of their one-year projects to the public, providing an exciting insight into the diversity of informatics topics.
Software development in agile projects
Diversity of tasks
Informaticians deal with the conception, implementation and use of computer systems, usually solving complex algorithmic, formal or methodological problems. The tasks stem from system programming, the development of software tools and application programming as well as the quality assurance of complex software systems. Since information technology systems are so pervasive, there is no typical branch of informatics. On the contrary, information technology systems are now used in all industries and sectors. They are often also the driving force behind innovations. For this reason, it is important that informaticians learn to familiarise themselves with the language and requirements of the different sectors in addition to their own specialist knowledge.

Informatics is not just programming, but without programming, it is nothing Informatics
The strengths of computer systems lie in their ability to perform schematic processing of even large amounts of information at high speeds. You will learn how these systems can manage technical or business processes and support sustainable developments. Acquiring the mathematical basics is just as important for this process as being able to develop and evaluate models and produce precision programming. Concrete examples are used to test the interaction of hardware and software in business applications, in the Internet of Things and in complex IT infrastructures. The ability to work in a team is an essential skill for the later professional life of informaticians. This is why students work on projects consistently throughout their studies.
Programme overview
Focus on IT system integration: These days, software systems are no longer developed in a vacuum, they are usually integrated into an existing system landscape. In response, the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has established an IT system integration focus area.
Project orientation: Project-oriented learning from the first to the last semester provides a supportive study atmosphere and good career preparation.
Extracurricular learning: Interested students and teaching staff join together in extracurricular working groups, such as the infrastructure group, to jointly advance the IT infrastructure and research the latest open source technologies.
An early professional practice semester gives students an insight into professional life, which lets them structure the study programme based on well-founded expectations of their subsequent professional field. Working in a company allows students to establish contacts and develop specific career prospects. Alternatively, an international internship or study abroad can be arranged, which will support the personal development of students with the acquisition of intercultural skills and international practical or study experience. The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences supports study abroad opportunities by cooperating with foreign universities and offering scholarships.
Admission and application
Admission to the programme requires a general higher education entrance qualification, an entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences or an educational qualification recognised as equivalent. The Registration Office and the Student Advisory Service can provide information on the options for studying without a higher education entrance qualification. The admission requirement for foreign students is an C1 language level in German.
The Informatics (INF) study programme admits students in the winter semester every year. The application deadline is 15 September. The application deadline for the winter semester 2024/25 has been extended to September 27. Please apply online through our ecampus application portal where you can upload all the necessary documents.
The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is a member of UNI-ASSIST (Application Services for International Students). Prospective students who have gained their university entrance qualification outside the European Union (EU) can therefore submit their application directly to UNI-ASSIST. To ensure adequate processing time, the application for the winter semester should be submitted to UNI-ASSIST by 30 June. Following a successful review, this is forwarded on to the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. UNI-ASSIST charges applicants a fee to process the application.
You can find further information on the application procedure on the Registration and Examination Office’s website.
Before study commences, take advantage of the opportunity to participate in our internal preparatory courses as well as the offers for prospective students.
