The first two semesters focus on basic science and engineering subjects. The following stage of the Industrial Plant and Energy Technology specialisation (Anlagenbetriebstechnik - Energietechnik) essentially includes courses on the knowledge and skills required for the operation of machine plants. The key focus here is on combustion engines, work machines, steam systems, electrical machines and the field of automation and process control engineering. Instruction in maintenance and machine dynamics, as well as operations management and occupational health and safety, are also included in this stage of advanced studies. In the core elective block, the students can acquire additional technical knowledge according to their own preferences. The sixth semester is when the professional practice phase takes place in a setting outside the university, and the seventh and final semester is set aside for the bachelor's thesis.

This also results in the increasing complexity of operational systems. In the scope of the Industrial Plant and Energy Technology specialisation within the engineering programme, students are taught the knowledge and skills to design, supervise and cost-effectively operate technical plants for energy supply and energy conversion. This practice-oriented programme with its solid grounding in the teaching of scientific methods enables graduates to work in all areas of plant and energy technology, both nationally and internationally – whether in engineering and planning offices, energy supply companies, municipal enterprises, the project planning of conventional and regenerative energy plants or with government bodies and organisations for technical administration and oversight tasks. The qualification is rounded off with experience gained in the professional practice phase and during the phase of writing the bachelor's thesis, which may be undertaken in cooperation with an industrial company. This practical component ensures that graduates have the best prerequisites for starting a career in a dynamic and promising branch of industry.

The specialisation in Industrial Plant and Energy Technology (Anlagenbetriebstechnik - Energietechnik) deals with technical plants for energy supply and energy conversion, including the necessary auxiliary equipment. The focus is on the project planning, operation and maintenance of the plants. In addition to examining classical energy conversion systems such as combustion engines, gas turbines and steam plants, younger technologies such as wind energy or combined heat and power generation also come under consideration. Due to dwindling energy and raw material resources and the rising challenges of climate protection, the responsibility in this field of work is growing significantly. In order to meet the demands of ensuring continued security of supply and greater competitiveness, it is essential to conserve resources, integrate alternative energies and increase efficiency. These goals are of particular relevance in the Industrial Plant and Energy Technology specialisation.
Programme overview
In terms of content, Industrial Plant Technology deals with the operation and planning of power and process plants in the public and industrial sectors. The bachelor's degree programme therefore offers a combination of natural science and engineering fundamentals as well as subject-specific content that provides a holistic understanding of the subject area.
The extensive practical placements and exercises that form part of the programme ensure that students receive a goal-oriented professional qualification. Teaching takes place in small groups. The use of operating machines in laboratory sessions and in particular the use of machine simulators ensures a high level of practical relevance. In this way, the students gain direct insight into the practical tasks and problem-solving approaches of the field, which they can expand on at the university through their own experiments and project work.
In the sixth semester, there is a practical placement of at least 20 weeks. This can be completed at home or abroad in an industrial company, at a planning office or with a government body. During this practical placement, the students will carry out engineering activities under supervision, thus preparing themselves for their future careers.
In cooperation with our partner university Gdynia Maritime University in Poland, it is possible to acquire a fully recognised Polish bachelor's degree in the scope of a study exchange in addition to the German degree.
Admission and application
Admission to the programme requires a general higher education entrance qualification, an entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences or an educational qualification recognised as equivalent. The Registration Office and the Student Advisory Service can provide information on the options for studying without a higher education entrance qualification. The admission requirement for foreign students is an C1 language level in German.
The Engineering (ING) study programme admits students in the winter and summer semester every year. The application deadline for the winter semester is 15 August, while the deadline for the summer semester is 15 February. Please apply online through our ecampus application portal where you can upload all the necessary documents.
The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is a member of UNI-ASSIST (Application Services for International Students). Prospective students who have gained their university entrance qualification outside the European Union (EU) can therefore submit their application directly to UNI-ASSIST. To ensure adequate processing time, the application for the winter semester should be submitted to UNI-ASSIST by 30 June. Following a successful review, this is forwarded on to the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. UNI-ASSIST charges applicants a fee to process the application.
