Periode ist politisch
What do a German housewife, the Danish
crown princess, and an Indonesian factory worker
have in common? They menstruate. At least potentially,
because they belong to that part of the world's population
that has a cycle.
The legendary period, strawberry week, or
a visit from Aunt Flo is not only a completely
“normal” physical process, but also a prerequisite
for all of our existence — yet it is still considered
taboo, which has far-reaching consequences for the environment,
the economy, and gender equality.
“Periods are political,” says Franka Frei. The author and
gender researcher talks about culture and
history, religion and science, gender medicine,
and the question of why menstrual products should be available free of charge
in public restrooms.
Because if one thing is clear, it's that when it comes to periods,
there's much more to it than “just a little blood.”
