Financing options for international students in situations of financial need
Financial emergencies are a major challenge, especially for international students. In the state of Bremen, there are various ways to bridge a financial emergency situation as an international degree-student.
Below you will find an overview of the various support options.
Financial support in situations of need
You can apply for financial support from the aid fund of the Catholic student community. This can be done regardless of religious affiliation.
The association Xenos e.V. supports international students in Bremen and collects donations for students in financial distress. You can apply for support from Xenos at the International Office.
The Studierendenwerk Bremen (Student Union Bremen) offers financial support to students who are involuntarily in need. This is a loan which must be repaid later.
Further support options
The Studierendenwerk Bremen awards the so-called Freitisch, i.e. students in financial need can receive a voucher/credit for the canteen. Current information can also be found on the Studierendenwerk website.
Scholarships for international students
As part of the STIBET I-program it is not only possible to organize intercultural events, but we are also able to award scholarships. We can award graduation scholarships for students with outstanding academic achievements, scholarships for special social commitment, scholarship for equal opportunities and contact scholarships for incoming students from our partner universities.
In addition, international students can also apply for a so-called “scholarship for needy students from developing countries” in the final phase of their first degree.
STIBET I - graduation scholarship
International students who are enrolled in a regular Bachelor's or Master's program at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and who are in the final phase of their studies.
• You do not have a German (dual) citizenship,
• You have acquired your university entrance qualification abroad,
• You are enrolled at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences with the aim of obtaining a Bachelor's or Master's degree,
• You have achieved good academic performance with an average grade of at least 2.5,
• You are in the final phase of your studies and are expected to successfully complete your studies within one year,
• You are missing a maximum of 60 ECTS to complete your studies (including the final thesis)
• You are staying in Germany during the final phase,
• You are in financial need,
• You are not receiving any further funds from domestic or foreign bodies for the same purpose.
Successful completion must be proven by a corresponding diploma within one year of the start of the funding period.
Funding period (winter semester): October 1st to December 31st
Funding period (summer semester): May 1st to July 31st
The funding amount is between €250 and €992 per month. The exact amount and duration of the scholarship is determined by the selection committee and communicated to the scholarship holders in good time.
Please note the limit for the scholarship installment and the additional income. This is € 1,530 per month for students. If the sum of the scholarship installment and gross additional income exceeds the applicable limit, the scholarship installment must be reduced by the corresponding overdraft.
August 1-31, 2024 for an application for the winter semester 2024/25.
March 1-31, 2025 for an application for the summer semester 2025.

International students who are enrolled in a regular Bachelor's or Master's program at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and are characterized by outstanding commitment in an international context.
• You do not have a German (dual) citizenship,
• You have acquired your university entrance qualification abroad,
• You are enrolled at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences with the aim of obtaining a Bachelor's or Master's degree,
• You have achieved good academic performance with an average grade of at least 2.5,
• You are distinguished by outstanding commitment in the international context at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences,
• You are staying in Germany during the funding period,
• You do not receive any further funds from domestic or foreign bodies for the same purpose.
Funding period (winter semester): October 1st to December 31st
Funding period (summer semester): May 1st to July 31st
The funding amount is between €250 and €992 per month. The exact amount and duration of the scholarship is determined by the selection committee and communicated to the scholarship holders in good time.

• You are enrolled at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences with the aim of obtaining a Bachelor's or Master's degree,
• You are confronted with special challenges during your studies, e.g.:
Care for children up to the age of 12 in your own household; first and second degree relatives in need of care in Germany; degree of disability of at least 50% or chronic illness; refugee background;
• You are in financial need,
• You are staying in Germany during the funding period,
• You do not receive any further funds from domestic or foreign bodies for the same purpose.

Funding period (summer semester): May 1st to July 31st

Forms
Scholarships for students from developing countries
International students from developing countries, who meet all the specified application requirements in financial need during the final phase of their first degree.
Applications for a scholarship can generally be submitted on two specific days in January for the award period from March 1 to August 31 and on two specific days in July for the award period from September 1 to February 28/29. The exact days can be found on the website of the Studierendenwerk Bremen (https://www.stw-bremen.de/de/studienfinanzierung/stipendium).
Please note that your application documents must be submitted in person in Bremen!
