Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences brings students and the regional wind energy industry together

Three-day excursion to companies and research institutions  in the field of renewable energies

In times of energy crisis, the expansion of renewable energies is of enormous importance. The high demand for skilled labour is offset by a shortage of qualified young talent. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences provides training for this important sector. It brings its students from the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technologies and Wind Energy Technology degree programmes as well as the Maritime Technologies specialisation in the Engineering degree programme together with companies in the region.

This year's three-day excursion took students to five companies and research institutions: EWE's Hunte hydropower plant, Deutsche Windtechnik AG in Bremen, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Werk Cuxhaven, Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH of the Prysmian Group in Nordenham and Steelwind Nordenham GmbH. "There we were given a tour of the production of an offshore nacelle for wind turbines and were even allowed to look inside one. To give everyone a comparison of how big something like this is: you can imagine that this nacelle is as big as a cosy detached house, with two floors and a basement," says student Etienne Büchner.

It is already a tradition for students to get to know potential employers. Since 2017, regular excursions to regional companies and research institutions have been organised with Prof. Dr Carsten Fichter. "We want to enable our students to consider their professional future after graduation at an early stage. During our excursions, they can find out whether the companies and institutions are potential employers for them and whether they would prefer to work in research or industry," says Prof Dr Carsten Fichter. Topics for final theses can also be assigned during the visits.

The application phase for the winter semester 2024/25 is currently underway at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. Prospective students have until 15 August to apply for admission-free degree programmes via the university's own application portal ecampus.hs-bremerhaven.de.
